DEFENSE HELMET


(This is a combo helmet & dickey, which would keep
the head, ears and chest warm.)

Material:
approx 1110 yards light weight DK yarn
#5 (3 3/4 mm) DP needles or size to obtain gauge

GAUGE: 6 sts. = 1"

Using 2 needles, cast on 60 sts. K back and forth in garter
st., increading 1 st. at the end of each needle, every
other row 10 times (80 sts.) Work even until piece measures
9". Work across to within 5 sts. from end of needle. Turn.

Work across to within 5 sts. from end of needle, turn.
Work across to within 10 sts. from end of needle. Turn.
Work across to within 10 sts. from end of needle. Turn.
Work across to within 16 sts. from end of needle. Turn.
Work across to within 16 sts. from end of  needle.

Slip the 16 sts. at the end of the needle onto a holder.
Work across and slip other 16 end sts. onto holder. Slip
remaining 48 sts. onto holder. Now work another piece to
correspond.

Pick up 48 sts. of first piece and divide all sts. onto 3
needles, having 32 sts on each needle (96 sts.). Work round
and round in K 2, P 2 rib for 3". Next round: Starting at
shoulder side, where sts. were joined, K 12, slip next 24
sts. onto holder for face opening, K around to opening, and
K back and forth on these 72 sts. for 6 1/2". NEXT ROW:
K 50 sts., slip 1, K 1, p.s.s.o. (pass slip st. over), turn.
ROW 2: Slip 1, K 28 sts, slip 1, K 1, p.s.s.o, turn. Repeat
Row 2 until all sts. are used (30 sts. remain, this is the
3rd needle). Pick up and K 27 sts. from side of face opening,
and with the same needle, K 2, P 2 across 12 sts from stitch
holder. With 2nd needle, K 2, P 2 across remaining 12 sts.
and pick up 27 sts from other side. K 1 st. from 3rd
needle onto 2nd needle. K 2, P 2 across 28 sts. on 3rd
needle, work last st. onto first needle, K 2, P 2 across
first needle and continue in established rib for 1 1/2".
Bind off loosely, knitting the K sts. and purling the P
sts. Kitchener shoulder seams together.
