MATERIALS:

GAUGE:

NOTE: This is a triangular shawl which starts as a single st. Increases to its width are made in the first and last st of every wrong side row. All other increases made on wrong side rows are part of the pattern stitch.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cast on 1 st.
Row 1 (WS): (K1, p1, k1) in st.

Row 2 (RS): Purl.

Row 3: (K1, p1) in first st, (k1, p1, k1) in next st, (p1, k1) in last st.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: (K1, p1) in first st, (k1, p1, k1) in next st, * p3 tog, (k1, p1,
k1) in next st; rep from * across to last st, (p1, k1) in last st.

Repeat Rows 4 and 5 to desired depth, measuring from center bottom point to top edge. End with a Row 4. If finishing with fringe, cast off loosely in knit; if finishing shawl with lace edging, leave the sts on needle (to be bound off later with edging stitches.)

FINISHING: Add fringe or lace edging (see below). Hide any ends and block, if necessary.

FRINGE: Cut yarn into lengths 16 inches long. With right side facing attach 2 strands with larkshead knot to center bottom point; one 4-strand group made. Working up one short side, make another 4-strand group about 1/2 to 1 inch over. Take two strands from each group and tie together with overhand knot about 1 inch down their lengths, centering the knot between the two 4-strand groups' knots. Continue in this manner long rest of edge. Repeat along second side edge.

LACE EDGING: Using edging given below or one of your own choice, use a provisonal cast-on to cast on the required number of stitches. Attach edging to short sides of shawl, either as you knit the edging or by grafting after it is knit. When lace edging is long enough to fit along both short sides, do not bind off. Cut yarn. Place the live edging stitches on each end of edging onto the needle holding shawl's sts. Attach yarn and bind off all sts (edging and shawl) using a 3-st I-cord.

BLACKBERRY EDGING: Found in Motifs, Borders and Trims in Classic Knitted Cotton by Furze Hewitt & Billie Daley (Kangaroo Press, Kenthurst, New South Wales, Australia; 1988.)
