  1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and chocolate over low heat.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar.
  4. Carefully fold in the eggs one at a time, mixing well.
  5. Add the vanilla extract and stir.
  6. Stir in the sifted flour and chopped walnuts (if using), mixing until well combined.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into a greased 8x8x2-inch baking pan.
  8. Bake at 350ºF for 30 minutes, being careful not to overbake.
  9. Let the brownies cool completely before cutting them into 16 squares.
  10. Serve!
