Reading/Mining Assignment: Chapter 1
- "The ultimate smart machine is perhaps the human-like robot of science fiction stories, and the ultimate goal to create a genuinely intelligent machine."
- "AI is a fascinating subject to study as it overlaps with so many different subject areas, and not just computer science."
- "These include psychology, philosophy, and linguistics."
- "Paradoxically, it turns out that it is the mundane tasks that are generally much the hardest to automate."
- "Knowledge must be represented efficiently, and in a meaningful way."
- "However, you do know how to generate possibilities."
- "When working out how to get somehwere you might know all the roads/buses/trains, just not the best route to get you to your destination quickly."
- "So, although there is no human-like robot in sight, many ideas and concepts from AI are permeating modern computer science and current technology."
- "...while the best current speech understanding systems are based on statistical methods rather than a deep understanding of human language."
- "Should we expect to meet Commander Data in future? This is more a philosophical issue than an AI one, but we will briefly look at what has been said on the subject."
