MIDTERM
The midterm exam will take place on Monday September 24 from 1:50pm to 2:45pm, in SNYGG 103.
Program
The program covers what has been seen in class and the first 4 weeks of the quarter:
- Introduction to healthcare information systems (Chapter 1).
- The Health Information Management professions (Chapter 2).
- Human resource management (Chapter 15 in 4th edition, Chapter 16 in 3rd edition).
- Operational management (Chapter 16 in 4th edition, Chapter 17 in 3rd edition).
- Financial resources matters (Chapter 17 in 4th edition, Chapter 18 in 3rd edition).
- Patient privacy and legal matters (Chapter 14 in 4th edition, Chapter 15 in 3rd edition).
Midterm format
The midterm will last 50 minutes.
The textbook is allowed for the second part of the test.
No calculator is allowed.
You need to take only a pen and pencil (if you use one).
The test will comprise:
- 20 multiple choice questions answered closed book.
- A short essay (1 page to 2 pages maximum) of expository type – meant to expose an idea by bringing in evidence and analyzing it. The essay should comprise an introduction stating a thesis statement, paragraphs each articulated around one central idea, and a conclusion.
Example of essay topic: “Explain how HIPAA regulations affect the work of a health information management or health informatics professional daily work”. One paragraph could explain what HIPAA regulations are about, another one what are major aspects of HIPAA for the health information management professional, and one how these regulations have changed the work of the professional.
Midterm grading
Each question will be graded 2 points and the essay will be graded 60 points.

Second midterm study guide
The next midterm exam will take place on Monday October 29 from 1:50pm to 2:45pm, in SNYGG 103.
Program
The program covers what has been seen in class and the last 4 weeks of the quarter:
· Health information infrastructure (Chapter 3).
· Health concepts data (Chapter 4).
· Electronic health records (Chapter 5).
· Classification and coding (Chapter 6).
· Technological landscape (Chapter 7).
· Managing the electronic medical record (Chapter 9).
· Statistics (Chapter 10).
· Research and epidemiology (Chapter 11)
Midterm format
The midterm will last 50 minutes.
The textbook is allowed for the second part of the test.
Calculators are allowed and even recommended.
You need to take only a pen and pencil (if you use one).
The test will comprise:
- 20 multiple choice questions answered closed book.
- Three problems as exemplified in the review material provided for chapter 10 (statistics and data analysis).
Midterm grading
Each question will be graded 2 points and each problem will be graded 20 points.
