Dune (1965)


On the planet of Arrakis, a young nobleman named Paul Atreides faces familial and political betrayal as he navigates a complex web of alliances and conflicts surrounding the highly desired resource called Spice. Indigenous to Arrakis, Spice is integral for space travel, creates mind alterations, and affects other cultural aspects of the lives of the native Fremen. Dune has gone down in history as one of the most important and influential science fiction novels, as its a story that warns of following messiah figures under harsh cultural and economic climates. As Paul works to liberate the native Fremen on Arrakis, he must also battle his fate and the ever-growing prophecy of leading a holy war in the Atreides name.

Dune Messiah (1969)


Set 12 years after the events of the first book, Paul Atreides grapples with the consequences of his actions from the previous book and the burden of his new powers. Paul again faces challences both outside and within his social circles due to his growing religious and political influence. Dune Messiah is one of the most important books in the series, as it completes Paul's arc and bolsters the themes seen within the first book.

Children of Dune (1976)


Set nine years after the events of Dune Messiah, Children of Dune focuses on Paul's children, Leto II and Ghanima. The story primarily deals with Leto and Ghanima's rise to power due to Paul's absence. These characters must also deal with The future of Arrakis, as its ecology begins to drastically change. Lastly, Leto and Ghanima must navigate new problems created by Paul's sister Alia Atreides and the new religious figure known as The Preacher.

God Emperor of Dune (1981)


Roughly 3000 years have passed since the events of Children of Dune, and significant changes have occured within the universe due to the rule of Leto II Atreides, who is now known as the God Emperor. The narrative touches on themes of power, leadership, and the consequences of long-term rule. The story primarily revolves around Leto II Atreides' plan called the Golden Path, which is meant to ensure humanity's future, but requires heavy sacrifice and raises questions on Leto's methods and overall rule over the universe.

Heretics of Dune (1984)


Set 1500 years after the events of God Emperor of Dune, this story revolves around the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood and some new challenges and threats created by new factions and characters with their own agendas. Within the story, a discovery is made of Arrakis that throws the current established order into disarray. There are once again themes of power, control, and the nature of manipulation.

Chapterhouse: Dune (1985)


Set 2 years after the events of Heretics of Dune, the story takes place on the planet Chapterhouse, where the Bene Gesserit have taken refuge and attempted to recreate the conditions necessary for sandworms to exist. Much of the conflicts within the novel revolve around the feud between the Bene Gesserit and a faction called Honored Matres. The stories themes revolve around hope, resilience, and the potential for renewal as these factions fight for survival and dominance over one another.
