House Atreides


House Atreides is known for its honor, justice, and loyalty. They are a powerful and respected Great House within the Padishah Emperor's Imperium, ruling the oceanic planet Caladan. They can be characterized by their:

  • Nobility: Prioritizes fair treatment and well-being of their people, in contrast to their rivals, House Harkonnen.

  • Skilled Warriors: Known to have a well trained and disciplined military force.

  • Messianic Potential: The House Atreides lineage plays a pivotal role in the prophecy of the Kwisatz Haderach, a powerful being with god-like abilities.

House Harkonnen


House Harkonnen is known for its ruthlessness, cruelty, and thirst for power. They rule the planet Geidi Prime, known for its harsh environments and oppressed people. They can be characterized by their:

  • Brutality: Harkonnen's will exploit their subjects and even each other for personal gain, making them incredibly feared throughout the houses within the Imperium.

  • Manipulation: They are well versed in political schemes and often use treachery and violence to get what they want.

  • Depravity: House Harkonnen is known for its fascination with the bizzare, which is reflected within their culture through architecture, technology, and even their appearances.

House Corrino


House Corrino is the Imperial Dynasty, ruling over the entire Padishah Emperor's Imperium for ten millenia. They are often characterized by their:

  • Absolute Power: House Corrino holds the Golden Lion Throne, which affords them immense political and military power and gives them full control over the flow of the resource: Spice Melange.

  • Extreme Pragmatism: They cultivate an image of civility and order but will maintain their power by any means necessary, including brutal and forceful tactics.

  • Fear and Suspicion: Fear is used to maintain their control over others, especially through their elite guard of warriors called Sardaukar, which helps propagate their paranoid culture.

House Fenring


House Fenring is one of the most complex Great Houses within the Imperium, and have a close relationship to both the imperial House Corrino and the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. While they aren't as powerful as some of the other houses, their unique position to the throne gives them great influence across the Imperium.

  • Close to Emperor: House Fenring lacks a permanent planet to rule over and instead resides near the imperial capital on Kaitan, which gives them quick access and influence within the Imperial Courts.

  • Dual Loyalty: Lady Margot Fenring is a member of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood that holds significant sway over House Fenring decisions. Because of this, the house often holds agendas to serve both the Emperor and the sisterhood.

  • Skill and Ruthlessness: Count Hasimir Fenring, the house leader, is a ruthless assassin who is often utilized by the Emperor for delicate tasks.

Bene Gesserit


The Bene Gesserit Sisterhood is a powerful religious, political, and social group. They operate largely in the shadows, yet hold significant power through their:

  • Mysical Abilities: Members of the sisterhood are able to train their minds and bodies through rigorous training and conditioning, and are able to obtain heightened awareness, control over their bodies, and the manipulation of others through an ability called The Voice.

  • Breeding Program: The Bene Gesserit uphold a millenia-long breeding program in order to create the Kwisatz Haderach, the prophesied leader with immense power that reshapes the universe.

  • Political Influence: Members are strategically placed within or near positions of power across the Imperium in order to influence events and manipulate political agendas that serve their needs.

Fremen


The Fremen are the indigenous population of the desert planet Arrakis, known for their independence, resilience, and deep connection to their environment and religious beliefs. Some of their key characteristics include:

  • Survivability: The Fremen have successfully adapted to living in the harsh deserts by finding and conserving water in unique ways, navigating dangerous sandstorms and sandworm territory, and even learning to ride the giant worms which are integral to the planets ecology.

  • Fierce Warriors: Fremen are skilled fighters, and are able to stalk their enemy before attacking. They are also able to use specialized weapons such as the Crysknife. Much of their ferocity and efficiency in combat comes from years of struggle and survival on their harsh planet.

  • Spirituality and Messianic Beliefs: The Fremen's culture revolves around the legeng of the Lisan al-Gaib, a messiah figure that will lead their people to freedom on Arrakis. They also refer to the sandworms as a divine entity called Shai-Hulud, viewing them as both a source of danger and power. Both of these concepts play massive roles in the events of the Dune saga.
