Dune (1984)

Director: David Lynch

IMDB Rating: 6.3/10

David Lynch's film was the first live action adaptation of the first book within the Dune series. It is a bold, and arguably flawed adaptation of the beloved story, and has garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. The movie covers the entirety of the first book, and is still argued to this day on whether or not it lands as a faithful adaptation of the story, or if other adaptations cover the content in better ways.

Dune: Part 1 (2021)

Director: Denis Villeneuve

IMDB Rating: 8/10

Where to watch?: HBO Max

This is the second attempt at adapting the first book in a movie format, with great critic and audience reception. Some people argue that the movie doesn't work well as a standalone movie, as its ending feels anti-climactic due to splitting the first book into two seperate films. However, its combination with part 2 makes this arguably the best adaptation of the first novel with its striking performances and visual storytelling.
